flower power

"She wore flowers in her hair and carried magic secrets in her eyes."
-Arundhati Roy, The God of Small Things

It was absolutely perfect weather yesterday for Mother's Day. After brunch, I went over to a local park to walk around and soak in the sun... and it happened to be a good spot for a couple blog photos!

I'm really getting into the flower headband trend. I know that's all it is-- a trend-- but even still, I've jumped aboard the bandwagon. I picked up this daisy headband at Target.

a sunny afternoon

Go home, Maryland. You're weather drunk.

A couple days ago, it was 70 degrees outside and I broke out my first sundress of the season. Then, not even 3 days later: snow and sleet. Riddle me that.

Suffice to say, I took full advantage of the wonderful weather. Enter: new fave sundress, sandals, and sunnies. And in an effort to soak in as much sun as possible (because I had a feeling the first sign of summer would be short-lived), I sat outside on my lunch break to catch some rays.

Full length shot of the dress

Close up of the pattern. One of the panels is a gorgeous sheer lace.

Side note--
I love this dress because it reminds me of something I could find at Free People... but I got it at Target! The earthy tones, lightweight panels, and sheer lace are definitely elements I love in my favorite pieces from Free People. However, sadly realistically my budget doesn't exactly allow for that kind of shopping right now. That said, here are some of the dresses I am dreaming of in the meantime:

Intimately Love Me Loves Me Not Maxi, $108

Candela Ami Pieced Lace Maxi, $285

Edie Gurl Maxi, $98

A White Winter

Just because it's winter, doesn't mean you have to completely rule white out of your wardrobe. As you know, I'm a fan of pushing the everyday boundaries of fashion--- so integrating white into my wardrobe (even past the Labor Day deadline) is one of the rules I'm all for breaking.

Here's one example of how I worked white into my winter wardrobe last year.

Need some more inspiration? Here are some of my favorite winter white looks:

Do you wear white after Labor Day? I'd love to see how, and share your suggestions with my readers! Send outfit pics to GetJessedUp(at)gmail(dot)com

Until next time,

Black, White, Bowtie

I was playing around on Pinterest this weekend and stumbled across this chic look from fellow fashion blogger Blair Eadie of Atlantic-Pacific. I really love how she paired this white top with an oversized bow, black mini and two-toned pumps!

If you've been a GJU reader for a while, this outfit may look familiar! You may remember a similar ensemble I pulled together a few months ago in this blog post. These pieces are from my favorite consignment boutique, Wear It's At.

Is this an outfit you would wear? How would you style a tux-like, bow-tie top?

Do or Don't: White After Labor Day??

In my opinion, white pants can most definitely be worn past Labor Day, if done appropriately. You guys know I love J's Everyday Fashion, so of course I perused her blog and found a great example of how to rock white in the winter months.

J explains on her blog: "Why this works: There is definitely an art to wearing white denim in the winter. But paired with tall leather boots and a navy wool jacket, white jeans are just as appropriate in January as any other month!"

I totally agree with her! I actually have a blue striped sweater and navy jacket I could have worn to recreate this exact look. Maybe I'll do that for a future post...

But instead... I really wanted to wear this scarf (and my new cardi), so I changed it up a little bit. What do you think-- would you wear white in winter?

What I wore this weekend! 8/14/11

This weekend, I wanted to keep it casual and colorful! I found this outfit from the Eniko Mihalik for Mango Spring/Summer 2011 look book. I absolutely love the colors paired together in this look!

Here's a close up of the colors!

Since it's summer, I've not gotten much use out of my scarves. It was fun to break them out, and incorporate a floral scarf into my outfit today!

Shirt: American Eagle $15.50
Scarf: Target (Similar) $12.99

Black, White & an Accent

I love to wear black and white. It's a color combo that will never go out of style, super easy to pull together, and looks great every time. As I was culling through my outfit inspiration photos, I noticed a lot of the looks I pulled together were black and white, with one or two accent colors that pop. A great example of this is the picture of  Vanessa Minillo on the far right. She held a red clutch that was the perfect accent color for her outfit. (Again, you don't have to wear a dress to achieve this look. Pairing a white top with a black skirt, or pair of shorts will work also!)

This compilation is from 2threads.

For today's outfit, I recreated this black and white look with turquoise as my accent color (similar to the photo below).

My dress is from a boutique in Montreal that I picked up back when I was a senior in high school (so unfortunately, I can't tell you where to get it!). The bottom half of the dress has a beautiful turquoise detail in the pattern. I love the lace on the very bottom that ties together the lace sweetheart top! In the photos above, black strappy sandals or heels are paired with the dresses. So, for my outfit, I wore black wedges in a similar style.

STYLE TIP!

When I wear tops or dress with open neck lines, I like to keep my hair off my shoulders to draw more attention to the neckline of the dress. Hair pulled up off the neck also elongates your body, and shows off your shoulders! For this hairstyle, I parted my hair in the middle and brushed it back into a smooth, low bun. It's very easy to do, and takes no time at all!
